A shortage of small change developed in the late eighteenth century in Great Britain as the mint abandoned the striking of coppers. This shortage was aggravated by the stress of the Napoleonic Wars which began in the 1790's. The gap was filled in by private enterprise in the form of thousands of types of merchant tokens and counterfeits of regular issues. Collecting the merchant tokens became a fad in the late 1790's and the improved steam powered minting machinery made them cheaper to produce, setting off an explosion of issues. An early collector catalogue was written by a man named James Conder and this class of token is named after him. As unofficial issues, they are not listed in the SCWC. The "D & H" (Dalton and Hamer) catalog is the standard reference.
