Warwickshire 1788 3 shillings 6 pence token D&H-337
This specimen was lot 40235 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $1,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Trade Tokens. Warwickshire. Wilkinson's Silver 3 Shillings 6 Pence Token, 1788. PCGS AU-58. Barge type. A SCARCE silver issue with a greater nominal value than generally encountered for the series dominated by Penny and 1/2 Penny denominations, this pleasingly toned example presents only a light degree of handling across the high points. From the Richard Margolis Collection." Wikipedia comments, "John 'Iron-Mad' Wilkinson (1728 – 14 July 1808) was an English industrialist who pioneered the manufacture of cast iron and the use of cast-iron goods during the Industrial Revolution. He was the inventor of a precision boring machine that could bore cast iron cylinders, such as cannon barrels." We don't know why this odd denomination was selected.
