from the Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71161

This specimen was lot 71161 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $156. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Middlesex. Newgate. Copper 1/2 Penny Token, 1795. PCGS MS-65 Brown. A bold and highly detailed example of this type. The Newgate Prison with a square tower in the center on the obverse. On the reverse "PAYABLE AT THE RESIDENCE OF MESSRS SYMONDS WINTERBOTHAM RIDGWAY & HOLT". Toned nicely with cobalts and reds throughout." This variety has a milled edge; others have lettered edges.
