SB923-75155r.jpg

This specimen was lot 75155 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Trade Tokens. Hampshire. Emsworth. 1/2 Penny Token, 1795. PCGS MS-64 Red Brown. Commemorating Earl Howe and the glorious first of June. Warm steel-brown patina with abundant mint orange color remaining in the fields and within the protected areas of the design elements. Boldly struck overall with a hard, satiny texture that is smoother in hand than one might expect even at the MS-64 numeric grade level. An excellent example of the type for 1/2 Penny specialists. From the David Sterling Collection." The Glorious First of June was a naval victory over the French in 1794 with Earl Howe in command. Wikipedia comments,

"Both Britain and France claimed victory in the battle: Britain by virtue of capturing or sinking seven French ships without losing any of her own and remaining in control of the battle site; France because the vital convoy had passed through the Atlantic unharmed and arrived in France without significant loss. The two fleets were showered by their respective nations with both praise and criticism—the latter particularly directed at those captains not felt to have contributed significantly to the fighting."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper.
