This specimen was lot 32496 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2024), where it sold for $3,120. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Trade Tokens. Buckinghamshire. Aylesbury. Copper 1/2 Penny Token Mule, ND (1797). PCGS MS-64+ Red Brown. Obverse: Female personification of Justice seated facing on chair, holding sword and scales; Reverse: Man hanging left from gibbet; P (eye) T (=P I T [for William Pitt]) above; monument to right; in between, vine growing around pole surmounted by phrygian cap; shield bearing anchor at base; implements of the monarchy and clergy around. A VERY RARE type muling an Aylesbury obverse with one of Skidmore's satirical hangman reverses, this specimen boasts rich brilliance and flair, and is undoubtedly one of the finest that one can hope to encounter." Aylesbury is the county seat of Buckinghamshire, England, population 63,273 as of 2021.
