Like the Spanish American 8 reales, it has shown remarkable popularity as a silver trade coin in countries lacking the resources to strike such currency. As such it has been countermarked and restruck in various parts of the world, most commonly in the Middle East and Africa, and has even been chopmarked for circulation in China.
