Hungary 1742-KB thaler Dav-1125B
This specimen was lot 2705 in Goldberg sale 100 (Los Angeles, September 2017), where it sold for $376. The catalog description[1] noted, "Hungary. Taler, 1742-KB. Maria Theresia. Bust right. Reverse: Madonna and child. Sharply struck with deep original toning. PCGS graded AU-58." The auction description did not mention the bad scratch on reverse. This type, struck 1741-44 in several varieties, is common. It differs from the very similar Dav-1125A in the truncation of the bust. It is the first type struck for Maria Theresia, who succeeded Karl VI in 1740. Hungary stood by Maria Theresia during the War of the Austrian Succession, where Frederick the Great of Prussia invaded and annexed Silesia.
Recorded mintage: 879,000 (including Dav-1125A).
Specification: 28.82 g, 0.875 fine silver.
