Jean Elsen sale 164, lot 1640

This specimen was lot 1640 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €220 (about US$306 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SAINT EMPIRE, Marie-Thérèse (1740-1780), AR Taler, 1761, Hall. D/ B. diad. à d. R/ Aigle impériale couronnée. Fines griffes et traces d'ajustage. Très Beau. (Holy Roman Empire, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, silver thaler of 1761, Hall mint. Obverse: diademed bust right; reverse: crowned imperial eagle. Hairlines and traces of adjustment marks, Very Fine.)"

The first years (1751-53) were struck to the standard of 28.82 g, 0.875 fine silver. This type was struck to the convention standard 1754-65 and is somewhat scarce.

Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, 42-44 mm diameter, this specimen 27,83 g.
