Burgau 1765 thaler Dav-1147
This specimen was lot 4495 in Goldberg sale 69 (Los Angeles, May, 2012), where it sold for $920. The catalog description [2] noted, "Austria - Burgau. Taler, 1765 (Gunsburg). Maria Theresa. Armored bust right. Reverse: Crowned double eagle. Attractive original mint bloom. NGC graded MS-64." On the death of Charles VI in 1740, the redoubtable Maria Theresia was crowned Archduchess of Austria and queen of Hungary but, being a woman, could not be given the imperial crown. Therefore, after much debate and a war fomented by Frederick the Great of Prussia, her husband Francis of Lorraine was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 1745. This thaler was issued 1764-65 from the Günzburg mint and is common.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
