Künker sale 385, lot 3691

This specimen was lot 3691 in Künker sale 385 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,551 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Maria Theresia, 1740-1780. Konv.-Taler 1759, Hall. Prachtexemplar. Herrliche Patina, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz/Stempelglanz. Erworben 1995 bei der Firma M. Meister. (Holy Roman Empire, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, convention thaler of 1759, Hall mint. Outstanding example, superb patina, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

Thalers were struck in 1765 at Hall, Prague and Kremnitz with the bust of Francis I, who died that year. This one was struck for Maria Theresia 1754-65 and is fairly common. Another thaler with a slightly different hairstyle for the empress (Dav-1122) is also noted. After 1765, the veiled bust of Maria Theresia was used.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, this specimen 27.99 g.
