Künker sale 352, lot 1635

This specimen was lot 1635 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,670 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Franz I. 1745-1765. Dukat 1759, N-B, Nagybánya. GOLD. R Fassungsspuren, berieben, sehr schön. (Holy Roman Empire, Francis I, 1745-65, ducat of 1759, Nagybánya mint. Rare, mountmark, polished, very fine.)"

This type was struck for the Hapsburgs 1745-65 and is fairly common. We will follow the SCWC and file this under Austria altho it can also be considered Hungarian or Transylvanian. Francis I nominally ruled all three realms altho Maria Theresia made all the decisions. This type was struck with mintmarks PR (Prague), WI (Vienna), HA (Hall), NB (Nagybánya, shown here), CA (Karlsburg) and GR (Graz).

Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.46 g.
