Austria 1764-NB 1/4 ducat Fr-189
This specimen was lot 989 in Jean Elsen sale 138 (Brussels, September 2018), where it sold for €400 (about US$555 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SAINT EMPIRE, François Ier (1745-1765), AV quart de ducat, 1764NB, Nagybanya. D/ B. l. à d. R/ Aigle impériale couronnée. Rare Petite brisure du coin au revers. Superbe. (Holy Roman Empire, Francis I, 1745-65, quarter ducat of 1764, Nagybánya mint. Obverse: laureate bust to right; reverse: crowned imperial eagle. Rare, die clash on reverse, Extremely Fine.)"
We have reluctantly filed this under Austria even tho it could easily have been listed under Hungary or Transylvania, where it was made. Francis was not king of Hungary or prince of Transylvania (those titles were held by his wife, Maria Theresia) so perhaps this issue of 1755-65 was legally Austrian.
Reported Mintage: unknown.
Specification: 0.875 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 0,88 g.
