Austria 1765-NB 1/4 ducat Fr-189
This specimen was lot 3776 in Künker sale 385 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €1,100 (about US$1,422 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Franz I. 1745-1765. 1/4 Dukat 1765, NB, Nagybánya. GOLD. R Prachtexemplar. Winz. Schrötlingsfehler am Rand, fast Stempelglanz. Erworben 1994 bei der Firma M. Meiste. (Holy Roman Empire, Francis I, 1745-65, quarter ducat of 1765, Nagybánya mint. Rare, outstanding example, small edge defect, about Uncirculated.)"
We have reluctantly filed this under Austria even tho it could easily have been listed under Hungary or Transylvania, where it was made. Francis was not king of Hungary or prince of Transylvania (those titles were held by his wife, Maria Theresia) so perhaps this issue of 1755-65 was legally Austrian.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 0.875 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 0.86 g.
