Sincona sale 90, lot 1611

This specimen was lot 1611 in Sincona sale 90 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 5,750 CHF (about US$7,717 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RDR / ÖSTERREICH, Joseph II. 1765-1790. Dukat 1765 A, Wien. Kaiserdukat. Selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Gutes vorzüglich. Prachtexemplar mit feinem Prägeglanz. (Holy Roman Empire, Joseph II, 1765-90, "emperor's ducat" of 1765, Vienna mint. Rare, especially in this condition, Good extremely fine, Cabinet piece with nice mint luster.)"

Ducats were struck in 1765 for Francis I (KM 1725.2, 1843), Maria Theresia (KM 1756, 1783) and Joseph II (KM 1842, shown here, and KM 1844, griffin reverse). This type was struck 1765-80 with various mintmarks. This example realized over eight times the catalog value.
