Austria 1759-WI souverain d'or Fr-420
This specimen was lot 1113 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €1,400 (about US$1,949 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Marie-Thérèse (1740-1780), AV double souverain, 1759 W-I, Vienne. Type brabançon. D/ B. cour., dr., cuir. à d. R/ Écu échancré et couronné, sur une croix de Bourgogne. Rare. presque Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, gold double sovereign of 1759, Vienna mint, Brabazon type. Obverse: crowned, draped and armored bust right; reverse: crowned arms over a Burgundian cross. Rare, about Very Fine.)"
This type was struck at Vienna 1756-61. It is distinguished from the souverain struck at Brussels by the presence of the "WI" mintmark and a differently shaped shield on the reverse.
