Sincona Auction 103, lot 864

This specimen was lot 864 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 1,100 CHF (about US$1,677 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RDR / ÖSTERREICH Maria Theresia, 1740-1780. 2 Souverain d'or 1772 IC-SK, Wien. Münzmeister Johann August von Cronberg. Sehr schön. (Holy Roman Empire, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, double souverain d'or of 1772, Vienna mint. Very Fine.)"

The souverain denomination was a holdover from Spanish rule in the Low Countries during the seventeenth century and was struck until the collapse of the ancien regime. This type was struck at Vienna 1772-74 and 1780. Earlier issues showed the empress without a veil. It is distinguished from the souverain struck at Brussels by the presence of the "IC SK" initials and a differently shaped shield on the reverse. Later souverains d'or were struck for Joseph II all over the Hapsburg empire.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 11.06 g, 0.919 fine gold, this specimen 11.00 g.

Catalog reference: KM 27 (listed under Austria, Austria-Netherlands), Herinek 327, Fr-420.
