Jean Elsen sale 146, lot 1108

This specimen was lot 1108 in Jean Elsen sale 146 (Brussels, November 2020), where it sold for €1,800 (about US$2,623 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Marie-Thérèse (1740-1780), AV double souverain, 1773IC-SK, Vienne. Type brabançon. D/ B. voilé à d. R/ Ecu échancré d'Autriche-Bourgogne, couronné, sur une croix de Bourgogne. Très Beau à Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, gold double souverain of 1773, Vienna mint, Brabanter type. Obverse: veiled bust right; reverse: crowned arms of Austria-Burgundy over a Burgundian cross. Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

This type with the veiled bust of the empress was struck 1767-80 at Brussels and 1772-74 and 1780 at Vienna. Later souverains d'or were struck for Joseph II all over the Hapsburg empire.
