Austrian Netherlands 1779(a) souverain d'or Fr-137
The first specimen was lot 1165 in Jean Elsen sale 134 (Brussels, September 2017), where it sold for €2,600 (about US$4,801 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Marie-Thérèse (1740-1780), AV double souverain, 1779, Bruxelles. Troisième type. D/ B. voilé à d. R/ Ecu ovale d'Autriche-Bourgogne, couronné, sur une croix de Bourgogne. Rare Fines traces d'ajustage. Très Beau à Superbe. (Austrian Netherlands, duchy of Brabant, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, gold double souverain d'or of 1779, Brussels mint, third type. Obverse: Veiled bust to right; reverse: oval arms of Austria-Burgundy over a Burgundian cross, crown above. Rare, minor adjustment marks. Very fine to extremely fine.)"
The second specimen was lot 709 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,121 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Marie-Thérèse (1740-1780), AV double souverain, 1779, Bruxelles. Troisième type. D/ B. voilé à d. R/ Ecu ovale d'Autriche-Bourgogne, couronné, sur une croix de Bourgogne. Rare. presque Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, gold double souverain of 1779, Brussels mint, third type. Obverse: veiled bust right; reverse: crowned oval arms of Austria-Burgundy over a Burgundian cross. Rare, about Extremely Fine.)"
The souverain denomination was a holdover from Spanish rule in the seventeenth century and was struck until the collapse of the ancien regime. This style was struck 1767-72 and 1778-80 at Brussels. To mark the death of Francis I in 1765, the empress's bust was modified to show her in a veil. The Austrians lost Belgium to Revolutionary France in 1797.
