Austrian Netherlands 1780(a) kronenthaler Dav-1282
This specimen was lot 1232 in Jean Elsen sale 153 (Brussels, December 2022), where it sold for €180 (about US$228 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Marie-Thérèse (1740-1780), AR couronne, 1780, Bruxelles. D/ Aigle impériale couronnée. R/ Croix de Bourgogne entre trois couronnes, ornée du bijou de la Toison d'or. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, silver kronenthaler of 1780, Brussels mint. Obverse: crowned imperial eagle; reverse: Burgundian cross between three crowns, decorated with the jewels of the Golden Fleece. Very Fine.)"
This type was struck for Maria Theresia 1755-79 (this is an unlisted date) and was intended to replace the old patagons and ducatons struck by the Spanish. A similar type (Dav-1283) was also struck in Antwerp and Brussels in the name of Francis I. During the reign of Joseph II, kronenthalers were struck all over the Hapsburg empire. The Austrians lost Belgium to Revolutionary France in 1797. After the fall of Napoleon in 1815, Belgium passed to the king of the Netherlands.
