This specimen was lot 4865 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €850 (about US$1,169 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Maria Theresia, 1740-1780. Konv.-Taler 1772 AS, Hall. Hübsche Patina, vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines sächsischen Naturwissenschaftlers. (Holy Roman Empire, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, convention thaler of 1772, Hall mint. Handsome patina, extremely fine.)"

Austrian thalers for 1772 include KM 1838/Dav-1123 (shown here), KM 1849/Dav-1115 (Vienna mint), KM 1865/Dav-1124 (Hall mint), KM 1866.1/Dav-1116 (Vienna mint), KM 2074.1/Dav-1161. This one was struck 1765-72 and is fairly common. Like all Maria Theresia thalers minted after 1765, the queen is depicted wearing a widow's veil, noting the death of her husband Francis of Lorraine. The superseding type, Dav-1124, showed the empress in a smaller veil. The convention thaler, adopted in the 1750's, was 28.06 g, 0.833 fine, whereas earlier types were 28.82 g, 0.875 fine.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, lettered edge, this specimen 27,91 g.
