Künker Auction 441, lot 4850

This specimen was lot 4850 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €600 (about US$826 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Maria Theresia, 1740-1780. Konv.-Taler 1757, Wien. Etwas berieben, vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines sächsischen Naturwissenschaftlers. (Holy Roman Empire, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, convention thaler of 1757, Vienna mint. Polished, extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1754-65 to the convention standard and is common. The Vienna mint struck other thalers with the bust of Maria Theresia's husband, emperor Francis I. After Francis' death in 1765, the thalers of Maria Theresia were revised to depict her with a veil.
