Austria 1757-WI ducat Fr-425

from the Stack's Bowers 2024 ANA sale, lot 42008

This specimen was lot 42008 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $2,280. The catalog description^[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Holy Roman Empire. Ducat, 1757-WI. Vienna Mint. Franz I. NGC MS-60. The only example of the date in the NGC census, this Mint State stunner offers rich brilliance radiating throughout along with a rather engaging and enticing degree of golden-orange hues." This type was struck 1745-65 from Vienna (WI, shown here), Hall (HA), Nagybanya (NB), Karlsburg (CA), Graz (GR) and Prague (PR) but is not common. On the death of Charles VI in 1740, the redoubtable Maria Theresia was crowned Archduchess of Austria and queen of Hungary but, being a woman, could not be given the imperial crown. Therefore, after much debate and a war fomented by Frederick the Great of Prussia, her husband Francis of Lorraine was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 1745.
