The Republic of Djibouti is the former French Somaliland, acquired in 1839 from provincial sultans, and made into a French colony in 1896. The area received its independence from France in 1977 and remains poor tho without the governmental collapse experienced by Somalia next door.

The specimen shown is a countermarked Maria Teresa Thaler from Austria. It was lot 5123 in Heritage Auctions 2001 June Long Beach Signature Sale on June 2, 2001, and sold for US$275. The catalog description reads: "Djibouti, Scalloped square with an Arabic inscription counterstamped on an Austrian Maria Theresa taler, the coin is lightly cleaned XF and the C/S is VF/XF."
