Künker sale 423, lot 181

This specimen was lot 181 in Künker Auction 423 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €1,000 (about US$1,416 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HABSBURGISCHE ERBLANDE-ÖSTERREICH · RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Maria Theresia, 1740-1780. Konv.-Taler 1771 S/A-S, Hall. Mit Signatur S unter dem Brustbild auf der Vorderseite. Brustbild r. mit Diadem, Witwenschleier und umgelegtem Mantel, darunter die Signatur S ·//Gekrönter Doppeladler mit Kopfscheinen, auf der Brust zweifach gekröntes vierfeldiges Wappen (Ungarn, Böhmen / Burgund, Tirol), mit Mittelschild (österreichischer Bindenschild), zu den Seiten die geteilte Signatur A · - S · (Ludwig Aschpacher, Münzmeister in Hall 1765-1771 und Wardein Johann Joseph Stockner). Vorzüglich. Erworben 2005 von Heinz Tursky, Innsbruck. In der Literatur ist kein Haller Konventionstaler verzeichnet, der auf beiden Seiten Münzmeister- oder. Wardeininitialen trägt. (Holy Roman Empire, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, convention thaler of 1771, Hall mint. Obverse: Veiled, diademed and mantled bust right, with initial "S ·" under the bust; reverse: crowned and nimbate double headed eagle supports the double crowned and quarter arms of Hungary, Bohemia, Burgundy and Tyrol with the escutcheon of Austria, initials "AS" below. Extremely fine. No Hall Convention Thaler is recorded in the literature that bears the mint master's or warden's initials on both sides.)"

The SCWC records the normal issue (with AS on the reverse only) for 1765-72. Other thalers (Dav-1164) were struck for her son Joseph II in 1771.

Recorded mintage: unknown but normally common.

Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, 42-44 mm diameter, this specimen 28,01 g.
