Sincona sale 6, lot 2014
the Austrian Burgau in 1547, north of Augsburg, from Putzger's Atlas

This specimen was lot 2014 in Sincona sale 6 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 260 CHF (about US$320 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RDR/ÖSTERREICH Maria Theresia, 1740-1780. Taler 1777, Günzburg. Büste mit Schleier und Diadem rechts Rv. Doppelt gekröntes Wappen auf gekröntem Doppeladler. Vorzüglich. (Austria, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, thaler of 1777, Günzburg mint. Obverse: veiled and diademed bust to right; reverse: crowned double-headed eagle with crowned arms on breast; extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1773-80 and is a close relative of the famous Maria Theresia thaler of 1780. The Austrian issues for the Empire always featured her husband Francis (or her son Joseph after her husband's death in 1765) but those struck for Austria proper depicted the empress herself.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common.

Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, 41 mm diameter; this specimen is 27,96 g.
