Burgau 1774-SC thaler Dav-1150
This specimen was lot 1124 in Jean Elsen sale 161 (Brussels, March 2025), where it sold for €220 (about US$287 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SAINT EMPIRE, Marie-Thérèse (1740-1780), AR Taler, 1774 SC, Günzburg. D/ B. dr. et voilé à d. R/ Aigle impériale couronnée. Nettoyé. (Austria, Maria Teresia, 170-80, silver thaler of 1774, Günzburg mint. Obverse: draped and veiled bust right; reverse: crowned imperial eagle. Cleaned, Very Fine.)"
This type was struck 1773-80 and is a close relative of the famous Maria Theresia thaler of 1780. The Austrian issues for the Empire always featured her husband Francis (or her son Joseph after her husband's death in 1765) but those struck for Austria proper depicted the empress herself. The convention thaler, adopted in the 1750's, was 28.06 g, 0.833 fine, whereas earlier types were 28.82 g, 0.875 fine.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, 41 mm diameter, this specimen 27,91 g.
