Künker Auction 441, lot 4866

This specimen was lot 4866 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €2,800 (about US$3,852 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Maria Theresia, 1740-1780. Konv.-Taler 1775 IC - FA, Wien. Hübsche Patina, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Aus der Sammlung eines sächsischen Naturwissenschaftlers. (Holy Roman Empire, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, convention thaler of 1775, Vienna mint. Handsome patina, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

This type was struck 1772-79 and is common. Like all Maria Theresia thalers minted after 1765, the queen is depicted wearing a widow's veil, noting the death of her husband Francis of Lorraine. The convention thaler, adopted in the 1750's, was 28.06 g, 0.833 fine, whereas earlier types were 28.82 g, 0.875 fine.
