Jean Elsen sale 163, lot 1702
JE163-1702r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1702 in Jean Elsen sale 163 (Brussels, November 2025), where it sold for €1,600 (about US$1,848 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SAINT EMPIRE, Joseph II (1765-1790), AV double ducat, 1775 E-HG, Karlsburg. D/ B. l., dr. et cuir. à d. R/ Aigle impériale couronnée. Fines griffes. Avec brillant de frappe. (Holy Roman Empire, Joseph II, 1765-90, gold double ducat of 1775, Karslburg mint. Obverse: laureate draped and armored bust right; reverse: crowned imperial eagle. Fine scratches, with mint luster, about Extremely Fine.)"

This type was struck at Karlsburg in Hungary 1768-77 and is fairly common for a double ducat. Confusingly, the photo in the SCWC shows an obverse with the bust of Maria Theresia, Joseph's mother. There was such a double ducat struck at Karlsburg but it has a different reverse (Fr-541).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.98 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 6,96 g.
