Künker Auction 441, lot 4867

This specimen was lot 4867 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €1,500 (about US$2,064 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Maria Theresia, 1740-1780. 1/2 Konv.-Taler 1776 IC-FA, Wien. Kl. Schrötlingsfehler am Rand, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Aus der Sammlung Kommerzialrat Dr. Herbert Wenzel, Wien. Exemplar der Auktion Dorotheum Kunstabteilung 257, Wien 1963, Nr. 389. (Holy Roman Empire, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, half convention thaler of 1776, Vienna mint. Small edge crack, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

This type was struck 1773-80 and is fairly common. Like all Maria Theresia half thalers minted after 1765, the queen is depicted wearing a widow's veil, noting the death of her husband Francis of Lorraine. The convention thaler, adopted in the 1750's, was 28.06 g, 0.833 fine, whereas earlier types were 28.82 g, 0.875 fine.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 14.03 g, 0.833 fine silver, lettered edge, this specimen 14,03 g.
