Goldberg sale 80, lot 4140
Hungary 1744 thaler rev G80-4140.jpg

This specimen was lot 4140 in Goldberg sale 80 (Los Angeles, June 2014), where it sold for $1,058. The catalog description[1] noted, "Hungary. Taler, 1744-KB. Maria Theresia, 1740-1780. Beautiful original example with full mint luster and lovely steel gray toning. NGC graded MS-62." Despite being a two year type (1744-45), it is listed as one of the more common thalers of the period. The SCWC correctly catalogs this under Hungary, not Austria. Hungary was reconquered by the Austrians from the Turks by 1700 but was never part of the Empire. Maria Theresia was queen of Hungary but never Holy Roman Emperor (being female); her portrait appears on a long series of Hungarian thalers (Dav-1125, -1125A, -1125B, -1126, -1127, -1128, -1129, -1130, -1131, -1132).

Recorded mintage: 847,000 (includes Dav-1126, Dav-1127 and Dav-1128).

Specification: 28.82 g, 0.875 fine silver, .810 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Dav-1128, KM-337.1.
