Künker sale 353, lot 3693

This specimen was lot 3693 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €60 (about US$84 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. 4 Gute Pfennig 1764, D, Aurich. Prägung für die westlichen Landesteile. Leicht justiert, fast vorzüglich. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, four good pfenning of 1764, Aurich mint, struck for the western provinces. Lightly adjusted, about extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1764-68 for use in East Friesland. The "gute" in the name promises silver in the coin, if only a trace, as in this case. The regime had earlier tried circulating a pure copper three pfennig which was a failure. After narrowly escaping complete destruction in the Seven Years' War, Frederick II henceforth pursued a much less warlike foreign policy.

Recorded mintage: 1,482,000.

Specification: 1.04 g, 0.173 fine silver, this specimen is 0,96 g.

Catalog reference: KM 231 (listed under East Friesland), Olding 261; Kluge 270.1.
