Künker sale 353, lot 3619

This specimen was lot 3619 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €280 (about US$390 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. 18-Gröscher 1764, E, Königsberg. Prägung für die Provinz Preußen. Mit schlankem Adler sowie kursivem Monogramm auf der Brust und ungeteilter Wertzahl 18. Von größter Seltenheit. Sehr schön +. Exemplar der Auktion Westfälische Auktionsgesellschaft 20, Dortmund 2002, Nr. 710. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, eight groscher of 1764, Königsberg mint, struck for the province of Prussia, with skinny eagle and cursive monogram on the breast. Very rare, very fine or better.)"

This type was struck in 1764-65 for circulation in Prussia and neighboring Poland, where the weak government could do little to prevent the dumping of debased foreign coin.
