Stack's Bowers NYINC sale, lot 686
Prussia Stacks Jan15-686r.jpg

This specimen was lot 686 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $4,406.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Prussia. Taler, 1764-F. Friedrich II. NGC MS-64. Finest certified. RARE to find in this condition. Light adjustment marks on both sides. Very bright and reflective surfaces. An impressive example. From the Rockaway Collection." Silver thalers of eighteenth century Prussia are scarce as her issues were lighter and lower in fineness than those of neighboring states such as Saxony and Hannover. These coins were spent and the others hoarded. Despite Frederick the Great's strenuous efforts to build up the local economy, Prussia remained a poor and backward country. This type was struck 1764 only at Magdeburg (mintmark "F").

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-2588; KM-307.
