This specimen was lot 22369 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $90. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Prussia. 1/3 Taler, 1764-F. Magdeburg Mint. Friedrich II (1740-86). NGC VF-30. Listed as RARE with no valuation in Krause. While other mint marks are available for the type, a next to impossible to locate coin for this mint according to Krause. Located on the Elbe River, Magdeburg was an important trade center in the 18th century. Original with milky white tone and generous amounts of remaining detail, especially in the portrait." Silver thalers of eighteenth century Prussia are scarce as her issues were lighter and lower in fineness than those of neighboring states such as Saxony and Hannover. These coins were spent and the others hoarded. Despite Frederick the Great's strenuous efforts to build up the local economy, Prussia remained a poor and backward country. This type is listed for 1764-74 during the reign of Frederick the Great. Mintmarks include A (Berlin), B (Breslau), E (Konigsburg), F (Magdeburg). Most dates are common.
