Künker sale 294, lot 5070

This specimen was lot 5070 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €950 (about US$1,281 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RUSSLAND, KAISERREICH, Elisabeth, 1741-1761. 1/3 Taler 1761, Königsberg, geprägt für Ostpreußen unter russischer Besatzung. Fast vorzüglich. Exemplar der Slg. Bernhard Terletzki. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 20, Osnabrück 1991, Nr. 1894. (empire of Russia, Elizabeth, 1741-61, one-third thaler of 1761, Königsberg mint, struck for East Prussia under Russian occupation. About extremely fine.)"

This one-third thaler was issued by the Russians during their occupation of East Prussia during the Seven Years War (1757-63). It is accompanied by a one-sixth thaler (KM D290). Frederick the Great was trapped by the Russians and the Austrians and was preparing to surrender when the news arrived that the tsarina had suddenly died, withdrawing Russia from the war.
