Künker sale 294, lot 5071

This specimen was lot 5071 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €5,500 (about US$7,413 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RUSSLAND, KAISERREICH, Elisabeth, 1741-1761. 18 Groschen 1759, Königsberg, geprägt für Ostpreußen unter russischer Besatzung. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Feine Patina, vorzüglich. (empire of Russia, Elizabeth, 1741-61, 18 groschen of 1761, Königsberg mint, struck for East Prussia under Russian occupation. Very scarce, especially in this quality, fine patina, extremely fine.)"

This 18 groschen or tympf was issued by the Russians during their occupation of East Prussia during the Seven Years War (1757-63). We don't know why this specimen realized 16 times the catalog value. Frederick the Great was trapped by the Russians and the Austrians and was preparing to surrender in 1761 when the news arrived that the tsarina had suddenly died, withdrawing Russia from the war.
