Künker sale 353, lot 3784

The first specimen was lot 3783 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €160 (about US$223 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. 1/3 Reichstaler preuß. 1758, ohne Münzzeichen, Dresden. Prägung während des Siebenjährigen Krieges. Kl. Schrötlingsfehler, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Exemplar der Auktion Münzzentrum 101, Köln 1999, Nr. 3498. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, one third thaler, no mintmark, Dresden mint, struck during the Seven Years War. Small planchet flaws, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

The second specimen was lot 3784 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €200 (about US$278 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. 1/3 Reichstaler preuß. 1758, ohne Münzzeichen, Dresden. Prägung während des Siebenjährigen Krieges. Mit BOROSSORUM in der Vorderseitenumschrift. Feine Patina, vorzüglich. Exemplar der Slg. Virgil M. Brand, Teil 1, Auktion Leu 46, Zürich 1988, Nr. 425 (Lot). (Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, one third thaler, no mintmark, Dresden mint, struck during the Seven Years War, with "BOROSSORUM" in the obverse legend. Fine patina, extremely fine.)"

This was the first time this denomination was struck in Prussia since 1741. It was actually struck on contract by a private mintmaster at the Dresden mint, then occupied by Prussian troops. It was accompanied by a twelve mariengroschen (KM E284) and a six mariengroschen (KM D284). The specification given here is that used for the postwar issue (KM 303); we suspect that it was actually debased.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 8.35 g, 0.666 fine silver, 25 mm diameter, the first specimen 7,97 g; the second specimen 7,95 g.

Catalog reference: KM 285, the first specimen Olding 344; Kluge 342.1; the second specimen Olding 344 Anm. 3; Kluge 342.1.
