Künker sale 353, lot 3343

This specimen was lot 3343 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €7,000 (about US$9,742 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. Friedrichs d'or 1757, A, Berlin. Mit FRIDERICUS BORUSSORUM REX in der Vorderseitenumschrift und auf der rechten Seite der Waffengruppe 7 Spitzen. GOLD. Äußerst seltener Jahrgang. Winz. Randfehler, vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Galerie des Monnaies 25, Düsseldorf 1981, Nr. 103 und der Auktion Dr. Busso Peus Nachf. 357, Frankfurt/Main 1998, Nr. 2593. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, frederick d'or of 1757, Berlin mint, with "FRIDERICUS BORUSSORUM REX" in the obverse legend and seven spear points on the reverse. Extremely rare date. Minor edge nicks, extremely fine.)"

Altho Frederick began his reign by minting ducats, in 1741 he switched to friedrichs d'or, a renamed version of the wilhelm d'or minted by his father. The early issues are rare but the coin later came to be quite common and was imitated by other North German states as a five thaler gold coin. This type was struck 1752-63.
