Künker sale 353, lot 3807

This specimen was lot 3807 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €160 (about US$223 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. 6 Mariengroschen 1758, Münzzeichen Stern, Dresden. Prägung während des Siebenjährigen Krieges. R Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, struck during the Seven Years War, six mariengroschen of 1758, star mintmark, Dresden mint, struck during the Seven Years War. Rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This was the only time this denomination, theoretically worth one-third thaler, was struck in Prussia. It was actually struck on contract by a private mintmaster at the Dresden mint, then occupied by Prussian troops. It was accompanied by a twelve mariengroschen (KM E284) and several varieties of one-third thalers (KM 284, KM 285). It is not priced in the SCWC.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 4.80 g, silver, 25 mm diameter, this specimen 4,62 g.

Catalog reference: KM D284, Olding 367 a; Kluge 347.
