Künker sale 353, lot 3796

This specimen was lot 3796 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €600 (about US$835 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. 18-Gröscher 1758, A, Berlin. Prägung während des Siebenjährigen Krieges. Von größter Seltenheit. Prägeschwäche, sehr schön. Erworben am 10.11.2005 von Fritz Rudolf Künker, Osnabrück. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, eighteen groscher of 1758, Berlin mint, struck during the Seven Years War. Of the highest rarity, weakly struck, very fine.)"

This was the last of the denomination struck for East Prussia before the province was occupied by the Russians during the Seven Years' War. An 18 groscher with a crowned bust of Frederick was struck at Berlin (KM C284.1) and Magdeburg (C284.2) in 1758-59. Normal peacetime issues did not resume until 1763 and then only at Königsberg.
