Künker sale 353, lot 3795

This specimen was lot 3795 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €800 (about US$1,113 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. 18-Gröscher 1757, A, Berlin. Prägung während des Siebenjährigen Krieges. Von allergrößter Seltenheit. Justiert, Prägeschwäche, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Spezialsammlung Brandenburg-Preußen, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 33, Osnabrück 1996, Nr. 1130. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, 18 groscher of 1757, Berlin mint, struck during the Seven Years War. Of the highest rarity, adjusted, weakly struck, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This was the last of the denomination struck for East Prussia before the province was occupied by the Russians during the Seven Years' War. An 18 groscher with a crowned bust of Frederick was struck at Berlin (KM C284.1) and Magdeburg (KM C284.2) in 1758-59. Normal peacetime issues did not resume until 1763 and then only at Königsberg.
