Künker sale 353, lot 3643

This specimen was lot 3643 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €550 (about US$766 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. 6-Gröscher 1756, E, Königsberg. Prägung für die Provinz Preußen. Sächsisch-polnischer Typ. Von großer Seltenheit. Winz. Schrötlingsfehler, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Erworben im Oktober 1983. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, six groscher of 1756, Königsberg mint, struck for the province of Prussia, Saxon-Polish type. Extremely rare, minor field marks, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The six groscher and the accompanying three groscher and eighteen groscher were used in East Prussia and the neighboring parts of Poland. The armored bust type of 1753-57 was the first of the denomination minted since 1723. The Königsberg mint also struck this six groscher with a crowned bust in 1756, which is considerably scarcer. Altho labelled "FRIDERICUS BORUSSORUM REX", the bloated features are those of Augustus, elector of Saxony and king of Poland.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.12 g, silver, 21-22 mm diameter, this specimen 3,03 g.

Catalog reference: KM C279, Olding 213 a (this example); Kluge 229.2.
