Künker sale 353, lot 3842

This specimen was lot 3842 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €3,400 (about US$4,732 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Ostpreußen unter russischer Besatzung. 3-Gröscher 1759, ohne Münzzeichen, Königsberg. Mit RVSS am Ende der Vorderseitenumschrift und PRVSS am Ende der Rückseitenumschrift. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Fast vorzüglich. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, East Prussia under Russian occupation, three groscher of 1759, without mintmark, Königsberg mint. Very scarce in this quality, about extremely fine.)"

The Russian army occupied East Prussia 1759-62 during the Seven Years' War. During that period, the Königsberg mint was used to strike a strange hybrid of German denominations with the bust of empress Elizabeth. Schilling (KM 286), groschen (KM 287), two groscher (KM 288), three groscher (shown here), six groscher (KM B290) and eighteen groscher (KM C290) were struck. A variety exists for the three groscher (KM 289.2) with the word "ARGENTEA" inserted into the reverse legend. The six groscher is the most common.

Recorded mintage: 36,972 (KM 289.1 and KM 289.2).

Specification: 1.56 g, silver, 21 mm diameter, this specimen 1,30 g.

Catalog reference: KM 289.1, Olding 456 c; Kluge K 29.1.
