Künker sale 353, lot 3788

This specimen was part of lot 3788 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), which sold for €240 (about US$334 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. Ku.-3 Pfennig a) Ku.-3 Pfennig 1760 A, Berlin. Prägung während des Siebenjährigen Krieges. Dicker Schrötling. Erworben am 16.4.1971. ...2 Stück., Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, copper three pfennig of 1760, Berlin mint, struck during the Seven Years War, thick planchet. [One of] two pieces, very fine to extremely fine.)"

While it may seem perfectly normal for us to use low value coins struck from base metal, in the eighteenth century it was still a strange concept in many lands. The government of Prussia went to great lengths to issue small coins with a least a trace of silver but gave up in the face of rampant counterfeiting. This type was struck sporadically 1752-55, 1760-61 but was not a success. In 1764, the regime went back to striking billon three pfennig (KM 293).

Recorded mintage: 5,760,000 for all the dates.

Specification: 7.31 g, copper, 26.5 mm diameter, this specimen is 7,09 g.
