Künker sale 353, lot 3522

This specimen was lot 3522 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €950 (about US$1,322 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. Reichstaler preuß. 1764, E, Königsberg. RR Fast sehr schön. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, thaler of 1764, Königsberg mint. Very rare, about very fine.)

Ein eigenwilliges Porträt des Königs. Besonders durch die Gestaltung der Nase und der zum Mund heruntergezogenen Falte wird auch das "Spitze" des spöttisch-ironischen Wesens Friedrichs treffend wiedergegeben. Die Rückseite des Talers ist offensichtlich bereits nach einer aus Berlin kommenden Vorlage gearbeitet worden. Zur Zeit der Ausprägung dieses Talers waren an der Münze zu Königsberg der Medailleur Ludewig sowie der Stempelschneider Steinbrück beschäftigt. Wer von beiden das eigenwillige, aus der sonstigen Produktion herausragende Porträt des Königs schuf, kann nicht festgestellt werden. Die Menge der 1764 in Königsberg geprägten Taler muß sehr gering gewesen sein; die 5000-Stück-Grenze wurde nicht überschritten. Der Taler 1764 E zählt zu den seltensten preußischen Reichstalergeprägen der dritten Münzperiode Friedrichs, 1764-86. (An idiosyncratic portrait of the king. Particularly through the design of the nose and the fold drawn down towards the mouth, the "tip" of Friedrich's mocking and ironic nature is also aptly captured. The reverse of the thaler has obviously copied from a template from Berlin. At the time this thaler was struck, the medalist Ludewig and the die cutter Steinbrück were employed at the Koenigsberg mint. It cannot be determined which of the two created the idiosyncratic portrait of the king, which stands out from the rest of the production. The amount of thalers minted in Königsberg in 1764 must have been very small; the 5000-piece limit was not exceeded. The 1764 E thaler is one of the rarest dates from Friedrich's third minting period, 1764-86.)"

This thaler was struck in substantial quantities 1764-74. Being lighter and lower in silver than those of Prussia's neighbors, such as Brunswick and Saxony, it was spent and the others hoarded, leaving few survivors in choice condition altho worn examples are readily available. Königsberg struck this type 1764 and 1772 only.

Recorded mintage: unknown but less than 5,000.
