Künker sale 353, lot 3506

This specimen was lot 3506 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €550 (about US$755 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. Reichstaler preuß. 1764, C, Cleve. Sehr schön. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, thaler of 1764, Cleve mint, very fine.)"

This thaler was struck in substantial quantities 1764-74. Being lighter and lower in silver than those of Prussia's neighbors, such as Brunswick and Saxony, it was spent and the others hoarded, leaving few survivors in choice condition altho worn examples are readily available. Cleve struck this type 1764-65 only.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: 22.27 g, 0.750 fine silver, this specimen is 22.10 g.
