Künker sale 353, lot 3516

This specimen was lot 3516 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €160 (about US$220 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. 1/12 Taler (5 Stüber) 1766, C, Cleve. Winz. Zainende, sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion Berliner Münz-Cabinet 10, Berlin 1979, Nr. 3207. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, one twelfth thaler or five stuiver of 1766, Cleve mint. Minor clip, very fine.)"

The regular 1/12 thaler (KM 298) was struck 1764-71 at Berlin, Cleve and Breslau and is common. This varies from the regular issue by having "5 STUV:" added to the bottom of the reverse to enable it to circulate in Cleve, Mark, Ravensberg and Minden, where Dutch coins predominated. This particular version was struck 1765 only and is scarce.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.34 g, 0.437 fine silver, this specimen is 3.58 g.

Catalog reference: KM 61, Olding 103; Kluge 164.2.
