Künker sale 353, lot 3743

This specimen was lot 3743 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €900 (about US$1,253 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. 3 Kreuzer 1765, B, Breslau. Prägung für die Provinz Schlesien. Berliner Typ. Von großer Seltenheit. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 19, Osnabrück 1991, Nr. 577. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, three kreuzer of 1765, Breslau mint, struck for the province of Silesia, Berlin type. Extremely rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"

After Frederick the Great seized Silesia in 1742, he issued kreuzer denominated coinage for the province which did not directly convert into the thaler-based coinage used in the rest of the realm. One, three, six, 15 and 18 kreuzer were issued along with one and two groschel pieces. This type was struck 1764-65. The last three kreuzer was struck in 1786. After narrowly escaping complete destruction in the Seven Years' War, Frederick II henceforth pursued a much less warlike foreign policy.

Recorded mintage: 3,943,000 for 1764-65.

Specification: 1.67 g, 0.173 fine silver, 18.9 mm diameter, this specimen is 1,70 g.
