Künker sale 353, lot 3713

This specimen was lot 3713 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €100 (about US$139 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. 4 Gute Pfennig 1764, A, Berlin. Prägung für die westlichen Landesteile. Sehr schön. Erworben am 26.2.1971. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, four gute pfennig of 1764, Berlin mint, struck for the western provinces. Very fine.)"

This type was struck 1764 and 1766. The "gute" in the name promises silver in the coin, if only a trace, as in this case. The regime had earlier tried circulating a pure copper three pfennig which was a failure. After narrowly escaping complete destruction in the Seven Years' War, Frederick II henceforth pursued a much less warlike foreign policy.
