Künker sale 353, lot 3708

This specimen was lot 3708 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €85 (about US$118 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. Mariengroschen 1752, F, Magdeburg. Prägung für die westlichen Landesteile. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Slg. Manfred Olding, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 10, Osnabrück 1988, Nr. 457. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, mariengroschen of 1752, Magdeburg mint, struck for the western provinces. Scarce in this quality, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The denomination was struck only at Magdeburg and this was the first issue since 1706 (KM 66). It is not priced in the SCWC. Four and two mariengroschen (KM G268 and KM F268) were also struck in 1752. A similar coin was struck at the Aurich mint in East Friesland. One thaler equalled 36 mariengroschen.

Specification: 1.43 g, 0.312 fine silver, 17 mm diameter, this specimen 1,66 g.
